According to Braemar’s latest Quarterly Container Fleet Statistics, a surge in new vessel orders and a sharp drop in scrapping activity are widening the supply-demand gap. Global container capacity is set to expand by 10% this year over 2023 despite expectations that vessel recycling will hit records levels. Meanwhile, container volume growth will be just 3% to 4%, according to shipowner association BIMCO. 3m teu was ordered during the first half of the year, with carrier appetite for tonnage “only marginally slowed” from the vast 3.
