Introduction

Thermal runaway is a self-perpetuating cycle of heat generation within a battery, often leading to catastrophic failure. It typically begins when the battery is subjected to conditions that cause internal temperatures to rise beyond safe limits. As battery energy storage systems expand, recent fires and explosions prove compliance isn’t enough. Since this series was first issued, there have been at least sixteen further incidents of BESS failures1 around the world that have resulted in fires and damage to property, although there are no reports of significant injuries. Battery Energy Storage Systems, or BESS, help stabilize electrical grids by providing steady power flow despite fluctuations from inconsistent generation of renewable energy sources and other disruptions.
