Introduction
A solar-plus-storage project combining 300kW of PV and a 2MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) has been installed in the Polynesian archipelago nation of Tonga. The project on the island of Vava’u was commissioned by Tonga Power Limited (TPL), the country’s sole electric. Tonga is making tangible progress toward its renewable energy targets with the rollout of solar-powered mini-grid systems across its outer islands, in a bold move to reduce its dependence on expensive diesel imports and improve electricity access for remote communities. The two battery storage facilities use Storage GEM®, the innovative modular energy storage container technology developed by the Akuo Group. In the presence of Their Majesties King Tupou VI & Queen Nanasipau’u, The King & Queen of The Kingdom of Tonga, Tonga’s new 6MW solar power plant was officially launched today at Fualu, Tongatapu by Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga, Hon.
