Introduction
Hornsdale Power Reserve is a 150 MW (194 MWh) grid-connected energy storage system owned by Neoen co-located with the Hornsdale Wind Farm in the Mid North region of South Australia, also owned by Neoen. The so-called “Tesla big battery” seemed big at the time, and at 100 megawatts (MW) and 129 MWh it was indeed the biggest in the world, and around 100 times. The first quarter of 2025 was the second best on record for investment in large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Australia, with six projects worth $2. 4 billion in total reaching the financial commitment stage – delivering an extra 1. Once the neighbouring Limestone Coast West project is completed, the site will be the largest battery energy storage facility in the state.
