Central natural gas storage

Underground natural gas storage is a strategic tool for balancing demand and supplies across time, from seasons to days, helping to ensure the availability of gas supplies and storage capacity, especially when energy needs are highest. In California, natural gas serves as an energy resource for several purposes including: electrical power generation, industrial use, residential use, and commercial use. To maintain an adequate supply of natural gas to these markets, Underground Gas Storage (UGS) reservoirs store natural gas. Working gas in storage was 3,185 Bcf as of Friday, January 9, 2026, according to EIA estimates. In order to provide natural gas to our customers, PG&E owns and maintains more than 6,000 miles transmission pipelines, 42,000 miles distribution pipelines and three natural gas storage.
