Introduction
November 22, 2023: Australia’s federal government issued an urgent national fire safety warning notice over home solar storage systems on November 20 — linked to a lithium batteries recall dating back two years. A Sydney delivery driver died after an e-bike battery caught fire in his bedroom in February 2025. The outlet reported that the Country Fire Authority (CFA) in Victoria has been working with stakeholders such as EnergyAustralia and technology provider Wärtsilä to address risks. Lithium-ion battery fires are on the increase, but how many of these incidents involve solar batteries? Li-ion batteries are ubiquitous; used in everything from tiny sensors to hand-held electronics, scooters, home battery systems, electric vehicles, and large-scale renewable energy storage.
