Introduction
The San Jose plant acts as a giant power bank, storing excess daytime solar energy for evening use when demand spikes by 40% statewide. (June 11, 2025) - San José Clean Energy (SJCE) is proud to announce a significant expansion of its award-winning Solar Access Program, which provides 100% renewable energy to pollution-burdened, lower-income residents across San José at a 20% discount. This $800 million project occupies 18 acres near the Metcalf Energy Center, enabling seamless integration with existing power infrastructure. We are happy to announce that our first investment in new renewable energy, an innovative solar plus battery storage project in Kern County, is now producing power. Rooftop solar panels complement this goal and contribute to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. One of our Bold Goals is to become the world’s first 1 gigawatt solar city by 2040.
